CM takes MCD split row to Sonia’s door
Chief minister Sheila Dikshit met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday to seek approval for the proposed division of the MCD as there is no consensus between the city government and the party unit over the issue.
Sources said that Ms Dikshit had sought time from Mrs Gandhi to discuss a number of issues, including the government’s stand on the Shunglu Committee report and the division of MCD.
Though the Delhi Cabinet had given nod for a revised proposal for dividing the MCD into three units in place of five, DPCC chief J.P. Agarwal is reportedly in favour of a status quo.
“Mr Agarwal had written a letter to Mrs Gandhi stating that there should be no division of the MCD as the party is opposed to it,” sources added. It is learnt that the issue is now finally in the court of the party high command, which would take a decision.
Mr Agarwal is reportedly opposed to even the proposal of 50 per cent quota for women in MCD. However, sources said that the chief minister would not hold any talks with Mr Agarwal on the issue.
Ms Dikshit is learnt to have told Mrs Gandhi that the MCD division would improve its administrative efficiency. She also briefed Mrs Gandhi on her government’s response on the findings of the Shunglu Committee on the irregularities in CWG projects.
