Civic bodies to dismantle needless speedbreakers
The civic bodies in the city have put a halt to putting up new speed breakers and are even dismantling many following directions from lieutenant-governor Tejendra Khanna. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to take off all the existing speed breakers in its jurisdiction. The corporation has also stopped the construction of new speed breakers.
According to the orders, speed breakers are only permissible outside school premises, hospitals and other strategic locations and their height should not be more than 10 centimetres.
The order has come following several complaints that a large number of speed breakers had been constructed without prior permission from the road owning agencies.
Leader of the House in South Corporation, Subhash Arya said that following the L-G’s direction, the corporation has, as a policy matter, decided not to construct new speed breakers on its roads in its jurisdiction.
“Following the direction, the South Corporation has already started demolishing the illegally constructed speed breakers and the North and East municipal corporations will also start demolishing them soon,” said Mr Arya.
Confirming the move, a senior official of North Delhi Municipal Corporation said that the civic body would first target speed breakers in residential colonies that mushroomed without proper permission.
Any request for construction of speed breakers is analysed from traffic point of view and henceforth recommendation is sent to Speed Breaker Committee that decides the construction, said a senior traffic official.
This committee comprises of representatives of MCD, NDMC, PWD, CRRI, traffic police and concerned residents’ welfare association.
