Civic amenities to improve after MCD split, says Sheila
Virtually kickstarting the campaigning for the upcoming MCD elections, chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday accused the BJP, which rules the civic body, of failing to provide basic amenities to citizens. Ms Dikshit exuded confidence that the trifurcation of MCD would help in better delivery of services to Delhiites.
“MCD under BJP has failed to provide basic facilities to the people of Delhi. Presently, only one commissioner manages the whole city, which is very difficult,” she said at a public rally in east Delhi.
Municipal polls, slated for March, will be held for three new municipalities. Currently, one MCD commissioner manages Delhi with an area of 1,484 sq km and population of nearly 16.7 million.
The chief minister also highlighted her government’s decision to give 50 per cent quota to women in MCD elections.
“We are the first to give 50 per cent reservation to women in MCD elections. I am sure, people will see our good work and bring us to power in MCD in the coming elections,” she said.
Criticising the BJP for its alleged mismanagement of MCD, local MP Sandeep Dikshit, who represents the East Delhi constituency, said it had done nothing in its five-year term.
The Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill was passed by Delhi Assembly on December 1, paving the way for trifurcation of MCD.
