City operators start 48-hr cable blackout
A section of cable operators said they have decided not to provide services for 48 hours starting Friday night to protest against digitalisation and government neglect.
The call was given by a number of cable operators’ associations in the capital.
General secretary of West Delhi Cable Operators’ Association, Vineet Kumar said, “From 9 pm, all cable operators of Delhi will not provide feed for 48 hours.”
Cable operators are protesting after the government’s directive that TV cable services will be digitalised with effect from April 1 for which installation of set-top boxes (STBs) is necessary.
Kumar alleged that government decision of digitalisation of cable signals by the government has taken without considering the concerns of local cable operators (LCOs).
“It will put extra pressure on public and LCOs, as all investment made on instruments and wires for analog cable signals will become futile,” he added.
He claimed that so far `2,000 crores have been invested by the LCOs for analog signals .
Saying that digitalisation will put burden on public, Trans Yamuna Cable Operators Asso-ciation president Ashok Pandit said, “Earlier we were charging `100 to `200 for one cable connection on a number of TV sets in a home, but now we will be forced to charge `400 to `500 for one TV.”
