City needs better policing, says BJP
Delhi BJP welcomed the court order handing down death sentence to the four convicts in the December 16 gangrape case that had triggered violent protests in the city, besides other parts of the country.
Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said that justice has been delivered by the fast-track court’s verdict in the December 16 case
He said, “Justice has been done. This verdict will hopefully instil the fear of law in the perpetrators of crimes against women. However, the moot question is that why do people have to come on roads and hold protests and demonstrations to get justice.”
Mr Goel said that from Jessica Lal case to December 16 case, the outpouring of public anger has ultimately led to speedy investigation and disposal of case. “However, even after so much of public glare, it took more than 8 months to dispose off this case. One can imagine what would be happening in thousands of other such cases,” he said.
Mr Goel said that responsibility must be fixed and officials be held accountable for rising crime in general and crime against women in particular in order to make Delhi a safer city.
“Delhi requires better policing and stricter enforcement of law. Fast-track courts should be set up in all districts in sufficient numbers for speedy trial of rape cases and these courts must dispose of case within three months.”
“Focus must also be given to proper rehabilitation of rape victims in Delhi as they face discrimination at societal level. They must be provided with an environment that helps in dealing with the psychological impact of such incidents,” Mr Goel further added.
