Citizens’ safety high on priority list: Bassi
Bhim Sain Bassi, the 1977 batch IPS officer who took charge as the new police commissioner, said his first priority is to make Delhi safe for the citizens.
“Women, children and senior citizens will feel safe in the city. Street crime would be curbed with our best effort,” said the new police chief.
Mr Bassi added that cases will be lodged in every cognisable matter.
“The Delhi police need to change its attitude. If a woman or a man comes to the police station, he will be heard by police officials and case will be lodged. After lodging the FIR the investigation official will make best effort in the case. We want to simplify the life of our citizens. I know that it will show the crime graph high and detection can be low but I won’t mind,” said Mr Bassi.
On December 16 gangrape:
Mr Bassi said the Delhi police has always been alert as far as the security of women is concerned. Several steps have been taken for security of women, especially after the December 16 gangrape incident. “My priority will be to ensure that it is effectively implemented so that the women feel safe,” he said.
On bikers issue:
Mr Bassi called the recent death of a biker a sad incident. He said the police regrets the death of Karan Pandey, 19, who died in police firing. “The problem of performing stunts has become big in recent past. Every youth riding a bike or performing stunts is not a criminal and the police will speak to them and will urge them to stop creating menace on road,” he said, adding that the police can not put up barricades on all city roads.
Reintroducing old policies:
Mr Bassi said he has experience in tackling crime, and especially traffic problems, and for that he would regenerate several old policies.
“In the year 1980, we launched ‘Neighbour Watch Scheme’ and it had been a big success in curbing crime. We are mulling to launch it again,” he said pointing out that old traffic policies will also be regenerated to solve traffic problems. He said he would coordinate with various agencies that look after roads, including public works department to ease traffic jams.
On terrorism:
The new police chief said tackling terrorism has also been on the priority list of the Delhi police.
On IPL spot-fixing:
Asked how he plans to bring Dawood Ibrahim and his aide Chhota Shakeel to India to face trial in the IPL spot fixing case as they have been named in the chargesheet, Mr Bassi only said whatever is necessary will be done to punish the guilty.
“I will take detailed information about the case and whatever is necessary will be done,” he said.
The new police commissioner also warned of strong punitive action against police personnel if they are found involved in any indiscreet acts.
“Strict action would be taken against any policeman found involved in indiscreet acts,” Mr Bassi said.
