CBI arrests 6 in streetlight upgradation contractAGE CORRESPONDENT

The CBI has arrested six people, including three engineers working with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in connection with alleged irregularities committed in awarding Commonwealth Games related street-lighting upgradation contract (worth `34 crore) to a private firm. According to sources, the CBI, which had registered an FIR

in the case last year, has found that the accused MCD officials allegedly tampered with the contract’s tendering process to favour the private firm, which had bagged the contract.
Sources said, “The CBI probe has found that the accused MCD officials had manipulated the contract’s tendering process to favour a private firm and to eliminate other bidders, which cost the exchequer a loss of over `3 crore”. Those arrested included MCD’s superintending engineer D.K. Sugan, executive engineer O.P. Mahla and tender clerk Gurcharan. The CBI also arrested private firm’s directors T.P. Singh and P.P. Singh and Mehul Karnik. A city court remanded the accused persons to CBI custody for four days.
Meanwhile, the probe agencies have also started probing the reasons for the de-linking of certain major projects worth several hundred crores of rupees from the list of Commonwealth Games projects by the authorities concerned in Delhi. According to sources, the agencies have started collecting documents of all projects, which were de-linked from the Commonwealth Games projects.
The agencies are also expected to probe the circumstances under which the projects were de-linked, sources added.
“The mega projects, which were de-linked, include Shastri Park tunnel corridor for connecting east Delhi to north and north-east Delhi, project related to connecting of Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg to the Games Village and the Indira Gandhi indoor stadium and elevated east-west corridor from east Delhi to CP area among others,” sources said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
