Cabinet approves proposal to impose development charges
The Delhi Cabinet on Monday approved a proposal to impose `200 per square meter as development charge on residents of unauthorised colonies awaiting regularisation. A three-member group of ministers, headed by Delhi urban development minister A.K. Walia, had recommended to impose development charge on about 1,000 unauthorised colonies awaiting regularisation.
The chief minister’s office in a statement stated that the Cabinet has approved a development charge of `200 per square metre for provide basic amenities such as roads, drains, street light and community services on owners of the plots or houses in unauthorised colonies.
It has also been decided that the residents of unauthorised colonies would be given three months’ to make the due payment after the regularisation notification is issued. Further, interest at the rate of 10 per cent per annum may be levied in case the charges are paid after expiry of one year. “To facilitate payment of the charges in the colonies itself the RWAs may be allowed to collect the charges and further deposit in a special cell to be constituted in the urban development department,” stated the chief minister’s office. The MCD has been told to expedite finalisation of layout plans of unauthorised colonies to enable the city government to accelerate the pace of formal regularisation of such colonies, it added.
The Delhi Cabinet, in another decision, gave its nod to streamline functioning of street lights in the city. Now it has been decided to engage private power distribution companies, discoms, to provide maintenance and functioning of the street lights.
