Boy, 6, falls into open sewer, drowns
Violent protests erupted in central Delhi’s Ranjeet Nagar area on Friday evening after a six-year-old boy fell into an open sewer and died.
The incident took place at around 10 pm when the deceased boy, Rahul, fell into an open sewer in New Ranjeet Nagar area.
The police was informed through a PCR call by the local residents. However, by the time the victim was rescued, he had succumbed. The boy was rushed by the police to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
However, the irate local residents staged a protest alleging that the disaster management team and the Delhi police reached late to the spot. The police has however denied the allegations.
Rahul was returning home from a park with his friends on Friday evening when the incident happened.
“He was seen falling into the sewer by other kids. They immediately rushed home and informed his father, Satyender Pandey, an embroidery factory worker, and a PCR call was made. Before the rescue team could get him, the boy had died,” a senior police official said. The family lives in New Ranjeet Nagar area.
When the news of Rahul’s death spread in the locality, a large number of locals staged protest demonstration in the area.
The protesters alleged that the life of deceased could have been saved had the MCD acted on their repeated complaints to cover the sewer.
“It is difficult to spot in the dark. We filed several complaints at MCD office but nothing was done,” a local alleged.
The protesters also staged demonstrations outside the Ranjeet Nagar police station and shouted slogans against the civic authorities and the police. Senior police officials arrived at the spot to pacify the crowd.
A case of negligence has been registered and investigation is on.
