BJP slams Sheila govt on all fronts
The BJP virtually kickstarted its election campaign at the “Bijli Andolan” rally at the Ramlila Grounds here on Sunday by launching an offensive against the Congress government in the city.
Speaking at the rally, BJP president Rajnath Singh said no one can stop the BJP from coming back to power while appealing the people to oust the “corrupt” Congress government in the city. “No power can stop the ouster of this government in Delhi. I am confident that the BJP will form the government in Delhi. We should take a pledge to change both the Delhi government in the coming Assembly polls and later the Central government in the 2014 general elections,” Mr Singh said.
Lashing out at the UPA government, he said that despite ruling for a majority period post-Independence, the Congress has failed to eradicate poverty. Mr Singh said that over one crore people in Delhi were still living without basic amenities.
Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel assured that the BJP would bring down the power tariff by 30 per cent if the party is voted to power.
He alleged that consumers were being “fleeced” by private power distribution companies in connivance with the Delhi government. He rued that there was no competition among power companies leading to unregulated power rates.
He also unveiled a 10-point formula to bring down the electricity tariff by 30 per cent.
“To pay electricity bills, you will soon have to take bank loans. If voted to power, we will cut the tariff by 30 per cent. If my formula is followed, the CM can cut tariff from tomorrow,” Mr Goel said.
Promising to bring transparency in the power sector if his party won, the Delhi BJP president said discoms and Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission will be put under CAG’s ambit.
Slamming the Delhi government for scarcity of water, he said half of the city “remains thirsty” all the time.
Prof. Malhotra accused the government of committing “a big fraud” in the name of regularising unauthorised colonies. “There are at least 116 colonies which do not exist and yet they are announced to be regularised. Lakhs of rupees have gone into Congress leaders’ pockets,” he alleged.
Former Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta said, “People want to get rid of Congress. We challenge the CM to come and debate with us on the frauds in the power sector.”
The rally saw various factions in the party’s Delhi unit come together with Mr Goel and his detractors like senior leaders V.K. Malhotra, Harsh Vardhan, Arti Mehra and Vijender Gupta putting up a united show. However, BJP’s Delhi election in charge Nitin Gadkari and party’s co-convenor for Delhi affairs Navjot Singh Sidhu were absent.
