BJP boycotts meet on MCD
The political committee on the restructuring of the MCD headed by Delhi health minister A.K. Walia met for the first time on Friday. However, the meeting was boycotted by Mr V.K. Malhotra and Mr Jagdish Mukhi, the two members from the BJP. The committee set up to suggest reorganisation of the civic body reportedly took a decision in principle to recommend dividing the MCD into smaller bodies for the sake of better performance.
The committee will again meet on March 21 when it will discuss reports on restructuring of the MCD by the V.K. Malhotra and Deep Chand Bandhu committees.
Mr Walia said the meeting examined recommendations of previous committees on reform in MCD and broadly agreed on the recommendations of the V.K. Malhotra committee as well as Deep Chand Bandhu Committee, both of which had suggested splitting it into five units.
The BJP has said that its members would resign as chief minister Sheila Dikshit did not heed to the request of the Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly, V.K. Malhotra to take up the issue of full statehood in place of just trifurcation of the MCD.
The committee is now left with only three Delhi ministers as members and is now looked on just as a government body, which may not claim to arrive at a political consensus in the absence of the BJP members.
