Award to FOB that crashed before CWG
The foot overbridge near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the collapse of which just days before the 2010 Commonwealth Games had then brought “shame” to the national capital has won the “Special Award for Excellence in Design and Construction” and was declared the best infrastructure project on Friday at an award function to mark the 159th Central Public Works Department Day.
PWD chief engineer Sarvagya Srivastava received the award. Mr Srivastava said, “The foot overbridge constructed at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is a beautiful structure spanning 95 metres. It is one of the most elegant structures adorning the skylines of Delhi over the Barapullah elevated road corridor. These structures are testimony to the engineering excellence and high calibre of engineers. It has been decided that the government will use the same design in its future projects.” Incidentally, the Barapullah Corridor had won the award in 2011.
Following the collapse of the FOB in September 2010, construction work of all other FOBs was stopped. However, work on the foot overbridges near the stadium was allowed to resume in March 2012 after Delhi CM’s intervention.
