Another student attacked in JNU
Merely four days after a 22-year-old girl student was allegedly stabbed in a classroom by her classmate who later committed suicide, a 22-year-old Spanish language student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was slapped and molested in the university campus on Sunday by her friend, a former student, who was reportedly obsessed with her, the police said. The accused has been arrested.
An FIR has been registered at the Vasant Kunj (North) Police Station in this respect.
A police source said the accused, identified as Abhinandan Verma, had been the roommate of Akash, who allegedly committed suicide after attacking his female friend Roshni last Wednesday. The victim is a student of Spanish language.
“The accused Abhinandan Verma had come to meet his friend at her hostel on Sunday. After having a discussion he took her out of the hostel. They were sitting together and were discussing something when the accused tried to hug her. When she resisted his attempt and asked him to stay away, the accused got angry and slapped the victim in a fit of rage. He also tried to strangle her,” said the police source.
The source said the victim then went into a meeting where cases of sexual harassment were being discussed and narrated the incident. The police was called and the accused was arrested from the spot.
The official said Verma had also been the vice-president of a students’ body.
He had reportedly warned the victim not speak to other men and the victim had scolded him for interfering in her personal life.
“The victim and accused used to study together. They have been classmates and were good friends. However, the victim has alleged that Verma had tried to molest her in recent past but she did not call the police then,” said the police official.
