Anna charges up crowd
Unexpected downpour and the first working day after an extended weekend failed to dampen the spirits of a surging crowd at the Ramlila Maidan, the ground zero of the ongoing stand off between Team Anna and the government over the Jan Lokpal Bill.
Anna’s army of volunteers swung into action immediately, clearing pools of water collected on the dais where the Gandhian continued his fast for an unprecedented eighth day.
Perhaps in an attempt to lift the sagging spirits and morale of the crowd Anna made an appearance after a gap of 40 hours, breathing fire yet again. And this is what seems to have done the trick. Even as the volunteers cleared buckets of water out of the ground and erected the collapsed tents, Anna took the centre stage yet again.
The rhetoric of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” from the stage by the Gandhian was good enough to ignite the passion among the crowd, which one and all have been witnessing over the last few days. Rubbishing reports of his deteriorating health Anna said he would be happy to die for the country. Adding the national fervour to the atmosphere were the group of singers and street-play performers who have now become synonymous with the agitation. And if the mood of the crowd was anything to go by the rain clearly failed to play a dampener.
Although, the unexpected downpour took Anna supporters by surprise, they wasted little time in raising the three collapsed tents and draining out the collected water using buckets.
Team Anna has already written to the MCD, the agency in charge of the Ramlila Maidan, to clear the water logging and fumigation in wake of large crowds attending the ongoing protest.
