AISA candidates lead in JNU polls, final tally today
Red seems to be reigning again at JNU, with the ultra-Left All India Students Association leading in a majority of the 29 seats of councillors at the varsity today with the final tally of results expected Saturday.
Candidates of AISA gained an upper hand in as many as 17 seats of councillors of different schools, with 15 seats already in the group's kitty and its candidates leading at the other two.
Other groups like BJP’s student wing ABVP and Congress’ student arm NSUI were leading or winning three and four council seats, respectively.
The Students Federation of India was likely to take home two council seats, and Youth For Equality appeared to be drawing a blank as per last details available Friday evening.
The final tally of results as well as winners of the main office bearers — president, vice-president, general secretary and joint secretary — are expected to be declared Saturday morning.
According to officials, AISA’s presidential candidate Sucheta De was leading the pack by almost 300 votes by evening by the time 900 votes had been counted.
This is first student election in four years but a below par voter turnout of 61 per cent was witnessed at the varsity that is known for its political activism and awareness. JNU has traditionally been a bastion of Leftists groups.
