ABVP wins Dusu with 3-1 majority
For the second consecutive year, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) made a near sweep in Delhi University’s student union elections, winning three of the four seats.
Last year too, the ABVP had won three seats including the president’s post. But this year, the coveted post has gone to NSUI and the other three seats have been won by ABVP candidates.
NSUI’s Ajay Chhikara of the Law Centre polled 11,164 votes to defeat his nearest rival Nehas Singh of the ABVP by a margin of over 2,300 votes in the contest for the president’s post.
Vikas Choudhary of ABVP defeated Bhupendra Choudhary by a margin of 3,780 votes to bag the vice-presidential post, Vikas Yadav defeated Parag Sharma by a margin of 2,350 votes to become the secretary.
Deepak Bansal of the Department of Buddhist Studies too won by over 2,000 vote margin against Ashish Chaudhary of the Law Centre for the seat of joint secretary.
However, the going may be tough for Ajay Chhikara as surrounded by representatives of the other group in the students’ panel, he runs the risk of becoming a lame-duck president though candidates from both sides discounted this possibility, pledging to work in cooperation with each other.
The ABVP declared the verdict as a mandate against corruption and against the state and Central governments.
“The Anna Hazare movement against the Union government’s corrupt ministers has played a vital role in Dusu election. The result reflects the students’ anger. It also shows the students were happy by the work of the last union dominated by the ABVP representatives,” said ABVP state secretary Rohit Chahal.
The ABVP also alleged manipulation as a reason why they lost the main post.
“We will lodge a complaint. It’s surprising how the morning colleges saw 30 per cent votes being polled despite a deluge. We believe there were irregularities,” said ABVP media coordinator Sanjay Verma.
However, the NSUI tried to shrug off the Anna effect on the polls. “Ajay’s victory shows the trust of students. Despite all their propaganda, the ABVP could not win the most prestigious post,” said Shahnawaz Khan of the NSUI.
