Absconding woman, son arrested for murder

A 70-year-old woman was arrested along with her 39-year-old son for allegedly killing her 45-year-old daughter-in-law by setting her on fire. The incident has been reported from Patel Nagar area of central Delhi. The accused have been identified as Harbhajan Kaur, the mother-in-law of the deceased, and Harnek, the victim’s brother-in-law.

A senior police official said the deceased, identified as Prabhajeet Kaur, a beautician, was set on fire by the accused in November last year, following an argument over `4 lakhs.
Kaur was rushed to a nearby hospital where she succumbed during treatment. The accused were absconding since the incident. They were arrested by the police on Wednesday.
The police official further said that the deceased had said in her statement that she gave `4 lakhs to the accused but they were reluctant to repay the amount.
“The victim lived on the first floor of the house. Her husband had gone to Jalandhar and she was with her two kids. She said that her two children were sleeping in the room when the accused came on the pretext of discussing the matter. They refused to repay the money and had an argument following that,” said the police official.
The official further said that Harbhajan Kaur pressed her mouth from behind and Harnek Singh poured kerosene on her. Before she could understand anything, Harnek set her on fire.
The victim ran towards the bathroom shouting for help and tried to douse the fire with water. A neighbour called the police and she was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Initially, the police lodged an FIR of attempt to murder but added Section 302 (murder) of the IPC after the victim succumbed. Harnek and Harbhajan were absconding.
“They were arrested on Wednesday,” said the police official.
