84 riders fined, 2 bikes impounded in cop drive
The Delhi police, in an effort to curb youths from performing risky motorcycle stunts in and around India Gate, carried out a late night drive by setting up 40 check points and slapping fines on 84 motorcycle riders besides impounding eight bikes.
Deputy commissioner of Delhi police, S.B.S. Tyagi, said that around “40 check points were set up in the New Delhi district during which 584 motorcycles were checked, out of which 84 were challaned and eight were impounded.”
The drive was carried out on Friday night during which check points were set up at India Gate, Mandir Marg, Connaught Place and at other important roads, he said.
Mr Tyagi said that the drive was done in order to curb youths from performing “dangerous motorcycle stunts” which could eventually turn out to be life-threatening. Mr Tyagi also advised parents not to give vehicles to underage children.
“The drive was aimed at stopping youngsters from performing dangerous motorcycle stunts as they are life-threatening. Our motive is to ensure safe road environment for the citizens,” Mr Tyagi said.
Further, he continued, “Parents should not give vehicles to the under-aged, even grown ups should drive their vehicles responsibly.”
There have been a number of incidents in the past in and around India Gate where stunt junkies have either lost their lives or injured others.
