6 cops among 19 hurt in clash
Six Delhi policemen were injured along with 13 others when two groups clashed in Tilak Nagar area of west Delhi on Thursday. The police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. According to police sources, three locals, including one Raghunath and Sunny, were among the three persons who sustained bullet injuries.
The clash started at around 2 pm when a group of locals stopped a some bikers performing stunts on the road. They scolded the bikers for creating chaos in the area. The bikers’ group clashed with the locals and soon they started pelting stones at each other.
Speaking to this newspaper, additional commissioner of police (west) V. Renganathan said the clash occurred at around 2 pm when an argument between two groups turned violent and stones pelting started. The situation was brought under control by 7 pm. He said the injured, including the six policemen, were rushed to a nearby government hospital.
The police tried to intervene but the two groups went on a rampage and started pelting stones at the police party and set several vehicles on fire.
“We opened fire in air and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the crowd under control. 19 persons were hurt. Six policemen suffered injuries. They have head injures,” said a senior police official.
However, a police source said that around a dozen policemen were injured in the incident.
Senior police officials reached the spot immediately. Heavy police force was deployed in the area. Paramilitary force was also pressed into service and the area was cordoned off.
