53 child labourers rescued
The Delhi police rescued 53 child labourers from two northeast Delhi localities on Tuesday and arrested seven people in this connection. According to the members of NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan, the police conducted simultaneous raids in Sultanpuri and Mangolpuri.
The Delhi Task Force for Elimination of Child Labour raided six factories of leather and garment units on the tip-off given by the NGO. Sub divisional magistrate Ajay Kumar led the operation.
Most of the rescued child labourers were trafficked from the villages of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The children were below 14 years of age and the youngest was only seven-year-old.
The children were working there for more than three months without any wages. Some children who were working there for more than a year were paid a meager amount of ` 50-100 as weekly wages, they claimed.
“Some others were not being paid any wages and were told that their parents were given a sum of `1,500 when they were brought here,” the BBA said.
During India Action Week, an initiative by BBA for rescue and rehabilitation of child labourers, 173 children were rescued in Delhi in 23 raids, it said.
