At 45.7°C, mercury breaks decade-old record in city
Delhiites went through another day of searing heat as the national capital sizzled on Thursday with the mercury touching 45.7 degree Celsius mark, making it the hottest day of the season yet, and the highest temperature for the month of May in a decade.
Nine of the 11 weather stations in the city recorded a maximum of more than 45° Celsius for the first time this season. Palam recorded the high of 47.2° Celsius while Aya Nagar station recorded 47° Celsius.
The maximum at Safdarjung station was 45.7° Celsius, six degrees above normal.
The minimum temperature was recorded at 31.4° Celsius, as against Wednesday’s 30.3° Celsius. The minimum was also five degrees above normal.
On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was 44.9° Celsius.
Following the trend of rising mercury, the peak power demand in the city also shot up to year’s highest at 5,055 MW.
According to Met department data, Thursday was the hottest day for the month of May since 2003. The previous highest temperature for May was in 2010 when it was recorded at 45.4° Celsius.
The all-time record for May is 47.2° Celsius, recorded on May 29, 1944.
According to a met official, there would be no respite from the heat wave conditions which would continue and the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city are likely to hover around 45° Celsius and 32° Celsius, respectively.
