4 arrested for selling infants
Four persons, including two women and a doctor, have been arrested by the crime branch of the Delhi police for allegedly running an inter-state infant selling racket. Two infants have been recovered.
According to the police, one Pawan Sharma, 38, a resident of Sector-3 Rohini, and Ranjeeta Bhasin, 48, a resident of Shivaji Vihar, west Delhi, were arrested on Sunday and a male child, aged about eight months, was recovered from them.
At their instance, the police arrested another woman, Shobha Gupta, a resident of Madhu Vihar, and a doctor, Atul Kumar, who ran a medical centre at Paschim Vihar.
A two-months-old baby girl was recovered from Shobha. Both infants have been handed over to SOS Upvan Home, Safdarjung Enclave. The police said that Pawan used to procure infants from places outside the capital. In this case, he had procured the infants from West Bengal. He would pass the infants to Ranjeeta whose task was to secure a potential buyer. Ranjita used her two organisations — “Nav Roshni Chetna Mahila Samiti” and “Nav Jyoti Anathalaya” — as a front for such activities.
Ranjeeta was also in touch with Shobha in the racket. Dr Atul Kumar was allegedly involved in getting fake medical papers prepared to show that the woman to whom the child was finally sold was actually the mother of the child.
Shobha told the police that she had met one Anupama Lal, a worker at Bal Vihar (Mahavir Enclave, west Delhi), who was issueless and wanted a child. Shobha had promised her the same at a cost of `1.8 lakhs, ostensibly to meet legal formalities. After the girl child, she wanted a male infant, which too had been promised by Shobha. The amount charged was shared by all the players, with Shobha taking the lion’s share of `75,000.
