260 cases of fire reported in city
More than 260 fire incidents were reported in the last two days. Major fires broke out in a building in Rohini and Sabzi Mandi and a car was burnt due to firecrackers in Mayur Vihar. Delhi fire service officials confirmed that they received more than 260 calls regarding incidents of fire.
“On the day of Diwali, a major fire broke out in a building in Rohini. At least 7 people were reported inured in the incidents. Another incident was reported in Mayur Vihar when a parked WagonR car caught fire. No one was injured in the incident,” a police official said.
In Hauz Khaz, a blaze was reported from a four-storied building where “Prayag Restaurant” is located soon after its owners conducted Diwali puja at the premises.
No one was injured in the incident as the eatery was closed. Twelve fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was doused.
A cotton factory was gutted in a major fire in Sabzi Mandi area on Wednesday night. Twenty fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire.
On Thursday, a fire incident was reported in a shoe factory in Aman Vihar in outer Delhi. No one was reported injured. Over a dozen fire tenders were pressed into service.
The Delhi Fire Service received over 200 calls on Diwali itself.
A senior official said that they received over 210 calls from 12 am on Wednesday night to 8 am on Thursday.
The fire officials had received 211 calls in 2010 and 267 calls in 2009. The fire brigade had deployed fire tenders in markets which do not have fire stations nearby.
An official said that ninety nine per cent of staff was on duty on Diwali day.
