2 Africans held for duping man in ‘black’ notes racket
The crime branch has busted a black euro racket operated from the city by two foreign nationals who have been arrested
The police said the accused have been identified as Mohd Hassan, 34, a national of the Republic of Chad, and Ngwem Cyriac, 29, a soccer player with a Dehradun club, who hails from Cameroon.
A Haryana-based man had filed a complaint with the crime branch that he was cheated of `3 lakhs by the two. “The complainant met them at Ambedkar Stadium during a football match. Ngwem Cyriac befriended him and introduced him to his associate Mohd Hassan. They promised him 10 million euros in exchange of `40 lakh Indian currency. They took `3 lakhs from him on the pretext of purchasing chemicals to clean the black euro,” said DCP (crime) Ashok Chand.
“On October 20, Ngwem Cyriac called him to meet at a hotel in Paharganj. Hassan told him that he had brought a large quantity of black euros and wanted to exchange them for Indian currency to start a business in Delhi. They explained that the euros were coated with a black powder for security reasons and a chemical was required to remove the coating to clean them. They demonstrated the trick using original euros which the victim got exchanged without any hassle,” DCP Chand said.
“The complainant gave them `3 lakhs for purchasing the chemical after which the two started avoiding his calls. He became suspicious and filed a complaint . A trap was laid at Rohini (West) Metro Station which led to their arrest,” DCP Chand said.
