14 killed in fire at eunuchs’ event
At least 14 eunuchs died and 50 persons, most of them eunuchs, suffered burn injuries when a major fire broke out at a community function at Nand Nagri area in east Delhi during a function on Sunday.
The incident took place at a community hall where a three-day function was organised for the eunuchs. At least 500 eunuchs had gathered there.
“14 persons have died. 34 out of the 50 injured have been admitted to the GTB Hospital. The rest have been discharged,” a senior fire official said.
He said, “Fire broke out in a tent at the function venue. Soon, the flames engulfed everything around. We got the report about the incident at around 6.30 pm. 12 fire engines were rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire,” said the fire official.
The official said that all the injured were rushed to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Shahdara.
Meanwhile, senior police officials confirmed that 12 eunuchs succumbed in the hospital.
“We received a call about the incident and our teams were pressed into service. 12 victims died in the hospital,” said a senior police official. Many of the eunuchs were reported to be in critical condition when last reports came in.
“Prima facie it seems that a short circuit was the reason behind the fire. But the organisers of the seminar did not follow the safety guideline before erecting the tent, which resulted in a serious accident. We are investigating the case and legal action will be taken against the culprits,” the official added.
