13.5 lakh names off voters’ list in Delhi
The government on Friday informed the Rajya Sabha that names of 13.58 lakh voters in the national capital have been deleted from voters list by the Election Commission. To a separate question asked during Question Hour, the government clarified that the Aadhaar card is not mandatory to avail of subsidies under government schemes, including on domestic cooking gas.
Earlier, replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, law minister Kapil Sibal said the EC deleted the names after conducting a house-to-house survey to identify voters who have either shifted, expired or replicated (whose names appeared more than once in the electoral roll).
He said on the basis of the survey, 15.58 lakh voters were found to have either shifted, expired or replicated. He further said that of these 13.58 lakh names have been struck off the voters list after giving notice and an opportunity to them to represent against deletion.
