Apologising for the inconveniences to the people due to the ongoing Commonwealth Games projects, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday stated that her dream of making Delhi a world-class city is “finally coming true” with the city witnessing rapid development in the last decade. Ms Dikshit was speaking after unfurling the tricolour during the Independence Day celebrations.
“For the last three to four months, Delhiites had suffered due to the construction works undergoing in the city. I apologise to the citizens for this. But if we have to achieve something, then we have to sacrifice,” stated Ms Dikshit.
Taking the opportunity to address the issue of the alleged corruption in the Games projects, the chief minister said: “Lot of criticism have been there with regard to CWG preparation. If there is corruption, we will find out who is responsible and take stern action against them whoever they are — Central government or Delhi government officials or any others.”
Notwithstanding criticism of the ways the Games projects are being executed, the chief minister called upon the people to give a warm welcome to the visitors during the mega sporting events.
“We have already given a facelift to the city to give a pleasing atmosphere to the visitors, we must be ready to give them a warm welcome with our civic sense,” added the chief minister.
She further went on to assert that the Games would be the finest ever in the history of the Commonwealth Games.
“The event will be finest in the history of the Games. We have to prove that we are not behind anyone. For this, the citizens and the government have to work together,” stated Ms Dikshit.
On Delhi being on the verge of becoming a world-class city, the chief minister stated: “When I became the chief minister in 1998, I had one dream — to make Delhi a world-class city. Today, that dream is coming true.”
The chief minister went on to list achievements of her government by stating that “very soon Delhi will be power surplus, after the commissioning of the Bawana and Jhajhar power plants” apart adding that a number of infrastructure development activities have been carried out in the recent past.
She also listed out Metro, low-floor buses among the facilities that have come to Delhi.
On cleaning of river Yamuna, she said the government is targeting to rid the river of pollution within next two-three years.
