‘Radhika snubbed killer 3 days before murder’

Officers investigating the murder of Ramlal Anand College student Radhika Tanwar on Saturday said that the accused, 25-year-old Vijay, alias Ram Singh, had during sustained interrogation “confessed that three days before the murder he was snubbed by Radhika when he tried to approach her for a conversation.” They added that he also felt insulted at being beaten up for harassing her and had told his friends he would avenge the humiliation whenever he got the opportunity.

Briefing the media, deputy commissioner of police H.G.S. Dhaliwal pointed out that Singh “nurtured a deep grudge” against Radhika after he was beaten up for harassing her.
The police commissioner B.K. Gupta added, “Since Singh suffers from psychopathic obsession, he would follow women. He followed Radhika regularly. The immediate trigger was the snubbing by Radhika when he tried to speak to her.”
DCP Dhaliwal said: “Singh suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). He used to follow the bus in which she (Radhika) commuted in an autorickshaw. Sometimes, he would also board the bus.” However, the investigating officers did not show any evidence to substantiate their claim that Singh suffers from OCD. “It is a behavioural pattern and you don’t need scientific research to figure it out,” said Mr Dhaliwal.
“Once he followed Radhika to Green Park in South Delhi. It troubled him that she did not respond. He also did not have the courage to approach her and grew more obsessive. He never spoke to her. He also did not have her phone number,” states the confession report. The DCP said, “Singh frequented Naraina to see the victim. The family or friends did not know much about these things.” It is also learnt that the accused was beaten up for bothering Radhika twice in a span of 15 days in August and September 2007.
Police officers confirmed that Singh had allegedly fled the city two days after the murder but was caught within 12 hours of his reaching Vikroli, a Mumbai suburb. “He went to his friends in Rohini soon after the murder and claimed that he had been in a scuffle,” said the DCP. “In Rohini, Singh met his friends Tabrez and Ashraf and revealed to them he was involved in the murder of the girl”
Singh and his friends later went to Gurgaon railway station on Wednesday. While the friends, who were arrested on Friday, headed towards Sitapur, Singh slept at the railway station and boarded a train for Mumbai Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, Mr Gupta on Saturday also confirmed that a .315 bore country-made pistol used to commit the murder was recovered from Singh’s friend Shekhu in Pillanji village. “Besides the main accused, three others who helped him have also been arrested.”
The police commissioner said Radhika did not share “many things” with her family. “She was a brave girl and brushed aside these incidents though he was constantly following her,” he added.
