The right way to tango

When a dance as passionate as the Tango is to be performed, only a Bollywood hottie can do justice to it, as most actresses in the Indian film industry are sensual or surely can act as one.
I was recently asked to choreograph an advertisement for a leading deodorant brand. I was told that the theme is about a woman getting attracted to a man, who uses that particular brand of deodorant. The brief was that the dance and the mood should be passionate and sensual.
Now when I was told about the need for extreme body contact, passion to the extent of being obsession, just one thought crossed my mind, the film Jism. When I think of this highly sensual film, Bipasha Basu and her raw appeal cannot be missed. I feel she never looked as beautiful and seductive as that in any other film.
To my surprise, Bipasha was the brand ambassador for this product, and she was to shoot the advertisement. When the model is just right for the role, and the theme chosen is the correct one, the product has to be a hot seller, and that’s what exactly happened.
Bipasha learnt the Tango for this advertisement along with model Anuj Choudhary. It took us a day to set the choreography, and Bipasha with her sensuality and Anuj with his macho attitude, made the Tango look even more zealous and passionate.
We shot for two whole days for the 30 second-long commercial. Only people behind the camera can comprehend the kind of hard work that went into the dance.
In her high heels and a symmetrical dress Bipasha looked like a typical Tango dancer, and every inch an obsessive lover. After all the hard work, I asked her what she felt about the new form of dance, she smiled from ear to ear and replied, “Tango is a tough dance form, and performing it in high heels, is just too difficult.”
This just proved that western dances are not a piece of cake even for a seasoned actress like her.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
