Market your talent well
In today’s day and age when marketing a product is more important than the product itself, how can the field of dance be far behind? However, dance is a medium that is not fully affected by marketing, which is not as important as the quality of dance itself. Marketing can get you to the dance floor for the test, but it cannot help you pass it with flying colours.
Dancers often approach me through emails and phone calls, wanting to be a part of the films or stage shows that I choreograph. However, most of them lack in their marketing and presentation skills. In today’s article, I am going to inform all you dancers about the right way to market and present yourself to a choreographer or an event agent. Knowing how to present yourself to the people, who will be giving you an opportunity, is perhaps the most important aspect of your dancing career.
Once you have settled in with your training, which, by the way, never stops, and before you contact a choreographer or an agent, start looking at what you need to do to make yourself marketable in this industry.
The “look” of a dancer is important in India. Here, “look” also means the way a dancer conducts and has groomed himself. The best way is to take notice of dancers who work a lot and have created a look that sells. Experiment with different ways of presenting yourself. This may mean going for a different hairstyle, for example. Be an individual and find something to be comfortable in. Trying to be someone you are not, can backfire during meetings and auditions.
Things you must have:
wGood photos in colour: All you need is one good close up, one good body shot and one dance photo.
wResume: With specifications about training at the end and performing experience above.
wSome basic audition clothes.
wSome character accessories or props like hand fans, masks, etc.
wDifferent types of dance shoes are a must along with kneepads.
w A positive attitude and lots of energy
w After you have your ensemble together, it is the right time to get started with the round of making contacts and auditions. One of the “must dos” on your list is to get a dance agent.
Firstly, get a list of all the dance agents in town. Different Indian dance websites have dancers’ alliances. There is a large grapevine in India, so simply ask other dancers at the studios. This is often the best source of information.
Start by calling their offices to get information about the auditions. Try and approach as many people as you can, because each agency handles its client searches differently.
Always carry a picture with the resume. This is your calling card, remember to never ever go anywhere without it.
Now, after you have nailed the audition, the agency will want to interview you. It is important that you come across as an outgoing person, but not overbearing.
Be confident and clear about your ideas, and know your dance completely. If you are asked any technical or personal questions, be honest, because an honest dancer is a true dancer.
If they sign you, you will be given some instructions on what they expect of you. They will also give you a list of photographers they recommend.
Follow their advice completely, with utmost sincerity. Do not forget, you have worked hard to get here, and this is where your job opportunities are. Be ready for anything and everything on the dance floor, and remember to always keep the fire in the belly and attitude on toe.
