Dance knows no boundaries

Dance is one art form that indeed brings people together. It doesn’t limit itself to age, region, sex or shape and size. Dance speaks only one language, and that is of expression and togetherness. I was a witness to this last week when my dance studio organised our annual student dance day.

It has been exciting to see such various dance forms come to light in the recent years. I’ve had students from different parts of India like Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Delhi and even Kathmandu come up with such great work. What was more exhilarating was to see the spirit in dance lovers. That is one quality that separates dance lovers from the rest. They are so absorbed into the spirit of dancing, that everything else around doesn’t really matter.
With over 200 people dancing, 30 different famous dance numbers, showcasing over 14 different dance forms, I had students perform dance styles like Rumba, Samba, Cha Cha Cha, Jive, Paso Doble, Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Merengue, Swing, Bachata and two types of Salsa: the NY style and the Cuban style. It was no less than of those extravagant award function.
I’ve observed students at times not paying attention to detail or not following instructions properly, which is simply disappointing. As a teacher, one has many expectations and one just wants to see the students doing well. It was surprising to see the students take a completely new form on stage in their costumes and hairdos. I saw a new side to them that was confident, expressive and very impressive. I guess this is the magic of dance; the more you give your heart and soul to it, the more you gain from it. When dancers and dance lovers come together, the power that emanates from it is completely different.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
