Pak go down fighting
Chester-Le-Street, Sept. 10: England beat Pakistan by 24 runs in the first one-day international at the Riverside on Friday to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. England, after being put into bat, scored 274-6. Steve Davies top-scored for England with 87, while Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal took four wickets for 58 runs in nine overs. Davies was drafted into the England side in place of wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Kieswetter and he seized the opportunity to cement his place at the top of the order with 13 fours in a devastating 67-ball innings.
The hosts posted an imposing total from 41 overs after a two-hour delay caused by a wet outfield. Jonathan Trott weighed in with 69 and captain Andrew Strauss hit 41, while Saeed Ajmal took four for 58. In reply, Pakistan made 250 for 9 with Kamran Akmal top-scoring with 58. — AFP
