Lanka-Aussie match called off due to rain
Colombo: The World Cup Group A match between Sri Lanka and Australia was abandoned because of rain at R. Premadasa stadium on Saturday.
Sri Lanka, who chose to bat, were 146-3 after 32.5 overs when play was halted. After a delay of two and a half hours, play was finally abandoned with each side being awarded a point each.
Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara was unbeaten on 73 and Thilan Samaraweera and was building strong partnership with Thilan Samaraweera who was at 34 when the match was called off.
Earlier, Sangakkara won the toss and decided to bat against Australia.
As expected Sri Lanka, who have won two of their three matches, named all three spinners - Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath - in their side.
They left out paceman Nuwan Kulasekera from the line-up, which beat Kenya by nine wickets on Tuesday, bringing in left-arm spinner Herath on a brownish pitch, which is expected to turn.
Australia, with two wins in as many games, remained unchanged from the side, which beat New Zealand last week.
