IPL-5: Deccan Chargers in top flight
Having laid relatively low in the previous season of the IPL, the Deccan Chargers have chosen to fly with Emirates this time around.
The Middle East-based airline was unveiled as the principal sponsor of the team at a function here on Wednesday.
Announcing the three-year deal, Ms T. Gayatri Reddy, co-owner of Deccan Chargers said: “We are delighted to have Emirates, a leading airline and my favourite one, on board. We are ready to fly to greater heights with it.”
Emirates will adorn the front of the Chargers’ jersey. It will also find a place on the team’s track pants.
Emirates officials expressed joy at being bracketed with the IPL-2 champions.
“We are honoured to be associated with the Deccan Chargers and partnering the team for the next three IPL campaigns,” Mr Ohran Abbas, Emirates vice-president India and Nepal, said.
The Emirates, which is also the International Cricket Council’s official partner besides having a strong presence in football (official partner of the Fifa and sponsor of popular clubs such as Arsenal, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Hamburger SV besides affiliations with Spanish giants Real Madrid), golf, rugby, tennis, sailing and horse racing, plans to expand its visibility in the sporting arena.
“We will use this platform of sponsoring a strong, winning team like the Deccan Chargers to consolidate our position in the sporting world. IPL is a fantastic tournament and is viewed by billions around the world,” Mr Abbas said.
Speaking on the occasion, Deccan Chargers COO E. Venkatram Reddy promised a lot more excitement from the team.
Ms Gayatri Reddy seconded it. “We can’t wait for the excitement to begin. The Deccan Chargers promise a bouquet of on-field specials. We are ready to go,” she set the ball rolling.
“IPL-5 is going to be all fresh — new sponsors, new faces. We look forward to the tournament and repeating our winning performance. It will be great this time since we are making the effort to go to our catchment areas — in Vizag and Cuttack — and take the games live to our fans,” she added.
Earlier, Mr Abbas presented Ms Reddy with a silver dhow, the symbol of the Middle East. In turn, Ms Reddy gifted him a miniature version of Hyderabad’s most popular monument, the Charminar.
