‘Hungry’ Varun Aaron targets Asia Cup return
An unlucky Varun Aaron was upset about missing the Australian trip due to a back spasm and stress reaction that he developed during the West Indies ODI series in December.
However, the fastest bowler in the country is optimistic about making a recovery in time for the Asia Cup to be held in Bangladesh in March.
The 22-year-old Jharkhand speedster, en route to the National Cricket Academy for a rehab program, was in Chennai for a brief meeting with his early mentor Dennis Lillee at the MRF Pace Foundation on Monday. In an interview with this newspaper, Varun touched upon various topics.
Excerpts
On his physical condition: The discomfort is there, but the pain has subsided. Though I haven’t bowled yet, I am hopeful of doing so in a couple of weeks. I want to attain peak fitness before the Asia Cup.
On missing out on the Oz trip: Of course, I was upset to have missed such an important series. But then, injuries are unavoidable in any sport. These are early days for me and I only want to look ahead rather than worrying about the past.
On his visit to the MRF PF: I spent quality time, discussing various aspects of pace bowling with Lillee. It was more of an indoor session in which we compared my old videos with the new ones to find out if there was something amiss with my action.
On his experience with the national team: It’s been a great journey so far. Though I haven’t played along with Zaheer, I learnt a lot by interacting with him. He is always ready to give important tips. I like bowling in tandem with Umesh Yadav. We are good friends off the field as well.
