‘Fatigue no reason for India’s defeats’
Out-of-favour opener Gautam Gambhir has refused to read too much into India’s back-to-back losses at the ongoing tri-series in the Caribbean. Gambhir says it’s part and parcel of the game.
“It happens in every sport, there are bad and good phases and these things happen. It’s part and parcel of cricket,” the Delhi batsman said on the sidelines of a function here.
The Indian team headed straight to the West Indies after their successful Champions Trophy campaign in England but Gambhir ruled out that fatigue may have played a role in their two losses.
“Not at all. If you talk about fatigue, then it should not only affect the Indian team but also the other teams. They should also get affected by it. Sri Lanka are playing the same amount of cricket as India. If the other team have played well, we must acknowledge it. There efforts should be recognised,” Gambhir opined.
India, who were unbeaten in the Champions Trophy, lost a close match against the hosts and on Tuesday, neighbours Sri Lanka inflicted a 161-run loss on the World Champions, hurting their chances of making it to the final of the event.
With India’s inspirational captain M.S. Dhoni ruled out of the tri-series because of a hamstring injury, his deputy Virat Kohli has found the going tough. Gambhir, however, refused to comment on his statemate’s captaincy.
“No comments. Thank you,” was Gambhir’s response on a question about the Kohli’s captaincy. Gambhir had roped in former India opener W.V. Raman to assist him for a week to fine-tune his batting technique but the 31-year-old was not very forthcoming on the association.
“A cricketer always work on his game whenever he gets the time and I was also doing the same thing. It’s not like I was working on my batting technique,” he said.
