England's Trott injures shoulder but no bone damage
England's injured batsman Jonathan Trott's hopes of batting again in the ongoing second Test against India received a boost after the X-rays cleared him of any bone damage at Trent Bridge on Saturday.
Trott, also an occasional medium-pacer, fell after lunch when diving at mid-off in an attempt to stop Rahul Dravid scoring a run as India replied to England's first innings 221.
The 30-year-old South Africa-born Trott, visibly in pain, needed several minutes' on-field treatment before he walked off the field unassisted.
He did not return to the field Saturday and did not bat in his usual number three spot when England lost opener Alastair Cook shortly before the close, with Trott's Warwickshire colleague Ian Bell batting in his place.
But an England statement issued after stumps said: "X-rays have cleared Jonathan Trott of bone damage to his left shoulder."
"He'll receive treatment tonight (Saturday) and his availability will be assessed again tomorrow (Sunday)."
If Trott, prolific since making a hundred on Test debut against Australia at The Oval in 2009, was ruled out of the rest of the match it would leave England a batsman down in their second innings as substitutes cannot bat or bowl but only field.
England closed on 24 for one in their second innings, a deficit of 43 runs, after Stuart Broad had taken a hat-trick on his way to Test-best figures of six for 46 during India's first innings 288 that featured Rahul Dravid's 117.
Andrew Strauss, the England captain, was six not out and Bell nine not out.
England lead this four-match series 1-0 after a 196-run first Test victory at Lord's.
The third Test starts at Edgbaston, Trott's Warwickshire home ground in Birmingham, central England, on August 10.
