The semi-finals and final for the Palyampatti Shield will be held only after the conclusion of the IPL.

The domestic season is also set to conclude with the Syed Musthaq Ali Trophy next week but the efforts from youngsters in the senior division league should not be forgotten in a hurry when the selectors sit to pick the age-group and Buchi Babu teams for 2012-13.

The top ten list this season has some new entrants. Apart from the usual suspects in Dinesh Karthik, C. Hemanath Kumar and R. Sathish a few others have also compelled attention with their sterling deeds. K. Vijay Shankar of Vijay CC did not let the responsibilities of leadership affect his batting.

Averaging a healthy 72 while accumulating over 1000 runs fore the season, Vijay Shankar was easily the pick among the young lot.

Bharath Shankar of UFCC (T. Nagar) was another batsman who remained consistent through the season.

Anand Subramaniam of Globe Trotters is no spring chicken but his methods at the crease have been assured and could be an answer to the state's lookout for solidity in the top-order.

KH Gopinath was another batsman who was easy on the eye with his pleasing stroke-play. R. Nilesh Subramaniam of Jolly Rovers was the pick among young openers.

The wicket-keeper batsman aggregated 456 runs in eight matches before a fractured thumb ruled him out of the last three games.

Off-spinner AC Prathiban of India Pistons topped the bowling charts with an impressive tally of 53 wickets followed by P. Sakthi (off-spin) who completed the league stage with 46 scalps.

Sakthi must get a bigger mention as he played for Aruna CC who did not have the advantage of a home ground.

Most of the other spinners in the list (including Prathiban) bowled a handful of matches on tracks that were designed to suit spinners.

The knockout games will be a litmus test for these spinners, as they will bowl on neutral wickets. Sunil Sam deserves a pat on the back, as he is the only medium pacer to finish in the top-10.

Other bowlers who do not figure in the table but impressed were Jolly Rovers medium pacer J. Kaushik and left-arm spinner Prasanth K Verma.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
