Depression killed Tamil Nadu cricketer?
The police on Monday indicated that cricketer P.K. Dharma, who committed suicide on Sunday, could have decided to take the extreme step because of depression over losing the match he was playing on Saturday.
Dharma used to get depressed whenever his team lost matches, according to his family members.
“According to his father Pandian, Dharma was at home when he and his wife went out. However, when they called on Dharma’s mobile phone there was no answer.
So they rushed home fearing something could have gone wrong. At home they found their son had hanged himself,” a senior police officer said. The officer pointed out that the parents were aware of their son being depressed.
According S. Sriram, captain of Globe Trotters (MRF) for which Dharma was playing, the deceased cricketer was well during the match. “He gave his best despite a sore finger,” said Sriram.
On Monday several teammates and TNCS officials gathered at the Royapettah General Hospital where Dharma’s body was kept for post mortem. IAS official P. Amudha, a relative, consoled Pandian at the hospital.
Dharma was the only child of Pandian and Kumudhini. He was a student of mechanical engineering at a private college near Chennai while his parents were employed in a state-run insurance firm.
Pandian was visibly shocked by the death of his only child and had collapsed many times near the mortuary on Monday morning while waiting to receive the body.
