Of all that a cricketer’s life entail, the ability to switch roles is a key factor. Be it being brand ambassadors in a goodwill cause to selling products on television, to teaching youngsters about the nuances of the game, the modern day player does not shy away from off-the-field activities.

Thursday was one such day for some of the Delhi Daredevils players, four of whom decided to take a ride in the Delhi Metro in a bid to educate the public about the safety measures to follow while using the service.

The move was part of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s effort to raise awareness about keeping the trains and platforms clean, not obstructing the doors and standing behind the yellow line at platforms.

Skipper Virender Sehwag, along with quicks Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav and all-rounder Yogesh Nagar boarded the Metro at the INA station - and what was supposed to be a lesson in security and adhering to the rules turned out to be a tough situation for the players.

Learning that their favourite stars were on board, thousands jostled their way into the station with the platform turning choc-a-block.

Security staff had a tough time handling the crowd, as there was a mad rush to capture the players on their cameras, while a few even tried to get inside the compartment that had been set aside for the Delhi Daredevils.

The players kept a cool head and decided not to interact with the public, but were seen sharing a laugh or two among themselves. The two-stop ride ended at the Udyog Bhawan halt.

Asked later, Pathan - who got a taste of the Delhi Metro for the first time - said it was a nice experience.
“I have travelled in metros around the world, but this was the first time in India. And I must say the facilities are really nice.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
