Concussed Gambhir undergoes head scan

Opener Gautam Gambhir did not bat in his usual position as India began their reply to England's 591 for six declared in the fourth and final Test at The Oval on Saturday after suffering concussion.

Gambhir sustained his injury when, trying to catch Kevin Pietersen the ball after the England batsman completed his century, he fell on his head at mid-on and dropped the chance shortly after tea on Friday's second day.

An India statement issued Saturday said: "Gautam Gambhir had a mild concussion when he hit the ground while attempting to catch a ball yesterday (Friday).

"As he was continuing to feel uncomfortable this (Saturday) morning, he was sent for a scan."

Veteran batsman Rahul Dravid was promoted one place up the order to open in Gambhir's absence on the third day.

But Dravid could only watch as Virender Sehwag, who took first strike, fell lbw for eight to James Anderson in the first over of India's innings.

England, already 3-0 up in this four-match series, replaced India at the top of the ICC's Test Championship table following an innings and 242-run victory at Edgbaston last week.
