Champions League T20 unveils new format
The second edition of the Champions League T20 will see 10 of the top Twenty20 teams from around the world vying for the title. Indian Premier League-3 runners-up Mumbai Indians will face South Africa’s Highveld Lions in the opening match of the tournament in Johannesburg on September 10.
In a departure from the previous edition, the 10 teams will be divided into two groups and the top two sides from each group will progress through to the semi-finals.
Mumbai Indians and IPL-3’s third-placed outfit Royal Challengers Bangalore have been placed in Group B along with the Lions, South Australia Redbacks, and a team from the West Indies, to be determined in late-July.
IPL champions Chennai Super Kings, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, are in Group A alongside the T20 champions from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, the organisers announced on Tuesday.
The final would be held in Johannesburg on September 26 while Durban and Centurion have been awarded the semi-finals on September 24 and 25 respectively.
Matches have been evenly distributed across the four venues, which also include Port Elizabeth, with each hosting at least five fixtures including the final.
