‘Captaincy for Virat can wait’
Richie Benaud had once said that great captains are made up of “10 per cent skill and 90 per cent luck but don’t try it without that ten per cent skill”.
And, Delhi-based Raj Kumar Sharma believes his pupil, Virat Kohli has that skill to become captain of Team India, but that he needs to concentrate on scoring runs before anything else..
“Little Master Sunil Gavaskar may have voiced his opinion about elevating Kohli to the captain’s post. It is up to the BCCI and the selectors to do that. My job is to advise Kohli to score more and more runs before thinking of anything else,” he said.
“I would not say it is the right time for him to lead, but Virat has good leadership quality. He led successfully at the Under-19 World Cup and is mature enough to take the burden.
“I have been speaking to Virat every day, but cannot reveal the discussions we have,” he added.
Sharma said Kohli was always up for challenges. “He likes to accept a challenge. He has faith in his abilities and is full of self-belief. I am confident whenever he gets an opportunity to lead the India team he will do a great job,” he said.
Kohli’s mentor started his own cricket academy in 1996-97 and Kohli was one among the 200 children enrolled on the very first day. He was impressed with the lad’s uninhibited enthusiasm and towering talent.
