Chennai: Gautam Gambhir (on 36) and Virat Kohli (on 50) are stabilising India as the hosts lost both the star openers - Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag – in quick succession after giving the team a solid start.

Earlier, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat against New Zealand.
