Australia were dismissed for 163 in their first innings to trail South Africa by 62 runs on the second day of the third and final Test against South Africa at the WACA Ground on Saturday.

Resuming at 33 for two in reply to South Africa's 225, the home team lost four wickets for 11 runs early to slump to 45 for six and never really recovered, conceding a handy innings lead to the Proteas.

Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, almost run out before he scored, was the only Australian batsman to offer prolonged resistance in making 68 off 102 balls, including three sixes and seven fours, while paceman John Hastings scored 32.

In his farewell Test, Australian veteran Ricky Ponting made just four before going leg before wicket to Vernon Philander, the decision upheld on review.

Pace spearhead Dale Steyn was the best of the South African bowlers with four for 40, while spinner Robin Peterson cleaned up the tail to snare three for 44.
