Ajmal strikes but Zimbabwe take lead
Half centuries from middle-order batsmen Malcolm Waller and Sikandar Raza lifted Zimbabwe to 281/7 and a 32-run lead over Pakistan on the second day of the first Test on Wednesday.
Waller struck 70 off 100 balls with 14 fours and Raza made 60 off 118 with 10 fours at Harare Sports Club.
At the close, Elton Chigumbura was on 40 with Shingi Masakadza on 2. For Pakistan, offspinner Saeed Ajmal bagged 4/77 and left-arm pace bowler Junaid Khan 2/61.
Earlier, Pakistan failed to add to their overnight score of 249/9 as Ajmal was bowled by pace bowler Tendai Chatara for 49, one short of his career-best score. It took Zimbabwe just two balls to wrap up the Pakistan innings at the start of play, with the tourists losing their last wicket without adding a run.
At lunch, Vusi Sibanda survived some hostile bowling as Zimbabwe made a cautious start to their first innings. Tina Mawoyo and Sibanda faced some challenging bowling from Pakistan’s left-arm opening bowlers, Junaid Khan and Rahat Ali.
After bowling four overs from over the wicket, Junaid switched to around the wicket and the change of angle brought immediate success as Mawoyo nudged tentatively at the first delivery of the new over and was caught behind by Adnan Akmal for 13.
