Adam Gilchrist backs Gayle role as freelancer

With Adam Gilchrist what you see is what you get. Asked to pick the most dangerous of the RCB players, the Kings XI skipper didn’t hesitate for a moment. “The obvious one walks out and opens the batting,” replied Gilchrist.

Chris Gayle certainly commands respect from one and all for his big-hitting abilities but Gilchirst went a step further to lend support to the big Jamaican on his decision to turn into a freelance T20 cricketer.

Queried on his take on cricketers turning into T20 specialists with club contracts across the globe, Gilchrist backed Gayle’s example.

“He (Gayle) gets people to watch the game. It doesn’t matter whether it is traditional cricket or short cricket. They shouldn’t be compared.

If Chris Gayle has made a choice that this is the area he wants to focus on, that is his choice and he should be given that freedom to do that.

“It is not that he is curtailed a prospective Test career. He has played 91 Tests. No one should question whether he is doing the right thing about the game or not. Up late, he is trying to work out with the West Indies cricket board,” said Gilchrist.

T20 specialists with multiple club contracts have made their mark in IPL-5 – be it Gayle, Owais Shah of Rajasthan Royals or Azhar Mahmood of Kings XI Punjab. Gilchrist acknowledged the new global trend.

“They are earning a lot of money. It is all about timing – they have been in the right place at the right time. This is the era where this new phase of cricket has come along with all those spoils.

They are earning big money because they are good at what they do,” opined the Aussie legend.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
