AB devilry floors WIndies

Feb. 24: South Africa got their campaign off to the prefect start, cruising to a seven-wicket victory over the West Indies at the Kotla here on Thursday.

Chasing 223 to win after debutant Imran Tahir (4/41) and pace ace Dale Steyn (3/24) ripped their way through the West Indian line-up. Man of the Match AB de Villiers put together a classy unbeaten 107 to spark the chase on a pitch that was the centre of all attention in the run-up to this match.

De Villiers’ effort spanned 105 balls and he hit eight boundaries and two sixes as South Africa chased down 223 with 43 balls to spare. De Villiers and his captain Graeme Smith put on an important 119 runs for the third wicket to all but take the game away from Darren Sammy’s men. The Windies had done well to remove opener Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis with just 20 on the board, but that was all put to naught by the two South African seniors.

De Villiers was into his stride quickly and with Smith (45, 78b, 2x4) holding one end well, took the attack to the Windies, who too opened with spin in the form of left-armer Suleiman Benn as Smith had done with Johan Botha earlier.

Smith fell with 84 runs needed which the brisk Jean Paul Duminy (42 not out, 53b, 1x4) knocked off with de Villiers. Earlier, the West Indies fell away in the hunt for what should have been a far more challenging total than they eventually managed.

Chris Gayle fell early to the off-spin of Johan Botha who had been handed the new ball. The move paid off almost immediately as the powerful Jamaican feathered an edge for Kallis to latch on to.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
