Operation Curvalicious!
Remember Kareena Kapoor in Tashan, Sonam Kapoor in Ayesha and Jennifer Aniston a couple of years ago? Yes, they all were famous for their size zero figures. But the same actresses in the recent past have gained some extra
kilos — not because of the roles they played in films but because of the fact that size zero has been shown the door, and curves are now the hottest assets.
When supermodels and actresses began working towards size zero, some fashion gurus and health experts came forward to bust the concept. In 2010, Victoria Beckham reportedly banned size zero models from taking part in the New York Fashion Week. Even brands like Prada and Armani declared a ban on anorexic models.
Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor, whose avatar in Chammak Challo made men go weak in their knees, is now in the news for gaining some curves and looking her sexiest best! Payal Gidwani, who is Kareena and Saif’s trainer explains, “Size zero was considered the in-thing few years ago. But after many of the models and celebrities began facing serious health problems, they realised that it’s not an ideal way to stay fit. It’s not advisable for anyone to take to extreme workouts or diets. The repercussions will begin to show a few months after.”
Curves add the oomph factor to women. Fitness gurus second this mantra. Mickey Mehta, India’s holistic health guru who is the person behind the svelte figures of many heroines and supermodels, explains, “The fuller the woman, the more attractive she gets. I have never propagated the size zero fad. A woman’s beauty lies in her figure.” On the side-effects of extreme workouts and diets, Mickey say, “The human body is like a temple. It must be worshipped and not abused. Women are more prone to facing a breakdown in health conditions, which is not ideal especially when looking good is the need of the hour.”
Says celebrity fitness guru Satyajit Chaurasia, who has trained Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and other B-town stars, “Too much of anything will have a negative impact on the body and this holds good even with the size zero fad. It is never a good idea to sport a sickly look. The repercussions will begin to show only after a couple of months and for women especially, the complications will increase considering their hormonal conditions.”
When looking good is the top priority, it is natural for youngsters to get carried away, which in turn leads to them resorting to extreme measures. Vicky Kapoor, Krav Maga expert says, “Celebrities and models sometimes skip eating during the day in order to fit into sexy attire. There are specific workouts that’ll help tone up specific body parts. A balance of good health and well-being is very difficult to attain when you resort to extreme measures. This only causes physical ailments and hormonal imbalances.”
Yasmine Karachiwala, who is the reason behind Sheila’s jawani in the film Tees Maar Khan, advises her clients to keep away from extreme workouts. She says, “While it may seem easy to burn all the fat with some quick workouts, it’s very difficult to bring on those perfect curves. But once you attain the perfect figure, you feel you’re on top of the world. Looking anorexic is simply not a good sign these days. Size zero is more of a health defect now than a fad!”
Several Bollywood beauties are now adding extra kilos to toned up figures. Priyanka Chopra, who wowed the industry with her hourglass figure in Dostana, admits that though she hates hitting the gym, she ensures she has a toned figure. She says, “While everyone was going gaga over the size zero fad, I never believed in extreme dieting and workouts. As it is, it takes a lot of effort for my trainer to make me workout since I hate gymming. But being healthy is top priority. I am a complete foodie so I ensure that my diet is well-balanced, which is the secret to my toned figure.”
For petite actress Genelia D’Souza, the secret is to eat every two hours. The sassy star who caught everyone’s attention with her new look in Force quips, “I have been an athlete all through school and college and that has helped me stay fit. My metabolic rate is very high, so I don’t add weight easily. But I make sure I don’t indulge in heavy workouts. I eat during regular intervals, so that ensures that I keep away from snacking.”
When you’re always in the limelight and you know the world has its eyes on you, one gets so conscious about one’s figure that one freaks out at the word ‘hunger’. Celebrity dietician and nutritionist, Shiny Chandran explains, “One must understand that feeling hungry is a good sign — it means that your body requires that energy. It is shocking to see a lot of women in their late thirties who come to me for consultation suffer from osteopenia, a case of weak bones and lack of calcium. All these symptoms begin to show at a later stage in life and is a repercussion of not following a balanced diet.”
Even in the world of fashion, the leggy beauties are beginning to look at physique and wellness from a practical perspective and are taking to a balanced diet. Gladrags supermodel Candice Pinto says, “Erratic shooting schedules mean no time for exercises. But the idea is to keep away from fatty food and binge on food that’s rich in proteins. There are plenty of options even without having to rely on fast food and when you know that looking good is what you’re paid for, it becomes your responsibility to keep at it.”
So if you’re figuring out the perfect look for your figure, aim for the killer curves.
