It won’t be an exaggeration, if we say that Youtube is the new-age teacher for net-savvy youngsters who love to sleep, eat and study in front of their PCs. From beauty tips to fitness mantras, guitar lessons, dance moves or cool sports, Youtube has everything for everyone.

A lot of kids, who are hooked on to these websites are now learning how to make the most of their “netizenship” and getting to learn the various artforms through the videos posted online. Jai Kumar, an engineering student says, “I am into rock music and on Youtube I love to watch my favourite bands perform all across the globe. I watch these videos again and again and try to learn their style and method. Sometimes I even copy their looks and moves. One of my favourite bands is Chemical Romance, and I have seen many videos to get the act right. On Youtube there are other teaching lessons too, where professional guitar coaches give really cool tips.”
For many young girls, Youtube is the best place to get their fashion fundas right with the latest beauty and styling tips.
Afsana Asar, 17, a student says, “I have seen many videos on Youtube on how to apply make-up and tricks to pep up your style quotient, with simple things. There are also trendy hairstyles and other beauty techniques online, where one can simply click and learn the coolest thing for free.”
For health freaks too, Youtube has a lot of interesting tips to offer with proper instructions.
Saumya Kapoor, a DU student says, “I love to workout during my free time, but I can’t go to gym regularly so I exercise at home. I recently came across some simple and interesting exercising lessons on Youtube by fitness instructors and tried them at home. I think it’s really helpful and informative.”
When it comes to activities like streetstyle football there are still no trainers or institutions in India to teach young kids this sport.
But, the enthusiasts have found a mentor in Youtube videos and Michael Keishing, a Class 11 student of goenka world schoolsays, “I saw some videos of streetstyle on the Internet two years back and started learning it myself after watching those clips. I learnt different hand, shoulder and head moves and started practicing them. For many people streetstyle football may look like an ordinary game, but it is a clever mix of dance and sports where the footballer has to show his creativity, talent and tricks to impress the onlooker.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
